Homes in Goleta
The Goleta Valley was mostly farmland until after World War II, when water from Lake Cachuma made a housing boom possible, so much of the city’s housing is postwar. Old Town, along Hollister Avenue, keeps older houses, such as a 1918 Craftsman bungalow on Aguila Avenue in the city’s historic inventory.
The City of Goleta’s Design Review Board has reviewed repaints of apartment and condominium buildings. For a house, check with the city’s Planning department before a big colour change.
Climate and coatings
Goleta gets the same late-spring marine layer and Sundowner winds as the rest of the South Coast. Mildew painted over grows back, so walls are washed before painting, and exterior paint should wait out fog and rain (Sherwin-Williams).
Sun breaks down a paint’s binder over time and leaves a chalky film. Dunn-Edwards recommends a UV-resistant 100% acrylic paint, and washing the chalk off before repainting.
