Two Bathroom Repairs, Goleta

Goleta

Finished upstairs bathroom with a clean white ceiling and walls, a bathtub and a toilet — Two Bathroom Repairs, Goleta.

Purple Painting repaired two bathrooms in a Goleta home. Upstairs we bleached off mildew, sealed it with a shellac stain-blocking primer, skim coated the ceiling and repainted. Downstairs we patched the old access panel opening in the drywall ceiling, then textured and repainted it.

Two bathrooms in a Goleta home had two different ceiling problems. Upstairs, mildew had spread across the ceiling and the wall above the door. Downstairs, an old plumbing access panel had left damaged drywall and a ragged hole overhead. Both bathrooms were finished in two days.

Upstairs, we cleaned and bleached the mildew off the walls and ceiling and sealed everything with a shellac stain-blocking primer so the stains can't bleed back through. The ceiling was skim coated smooth, then the walls, ceiling, door and trim got two coats in an eggshell finish, colour matched.

Downstairs, we cut out the damaged drywall and patched the old access panel opening. The patch was taped and mudded over two visits so it could dry properly, then sanded, textured to blend with the ceiling and repainted. Both bathrooms were painted in the same colour.

How we did it

  1. Mask and protect

Fixtures, the tub surround, flooring and adjacent areas were masked and protected.

  2. Bleach and clean the mildew

All mildew-affected wall and ceiling surfaces in the upstairs bathroom were bleached and cleaned.

  3. Block the stains

A full coat of alcohol-based shellac stain-blocking primer went on the ceiling and upper walls so the stains do not bleed back through.

  4. Paint two finish coats

Two finish coats on the walls, ceiling, door and door casing, in one colour-matched eggshell.

  5. Patch the ceiling opening

In the downstairs bathroom the old plumbing access panel was removed and new drywall cut and fitted to the opening.

  6. Tape, mud and sand

The patch was taped and mudded in a first pass, then sanded and finished on a return visit so it could dry properly.

  7. Prime and paint the repair

The patch and the wall anchor holes were primed and finish painted to blend in.
