Painted stucco exterior

Interior and Exterior Painting Services

Santa Barbara averages 72 degrees year-round so we do both interior and exterior painting during all months of the calendar year. On rainy weeks we will try to push back exterior painting projects as to not compromise any of the paint coatings.

Stucco, Masonry and Plaster Finishes

When it comes to painting exterior masonry and plaster, there are some important factors to consider. While it may seem like a simple process, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the best results. For instance, if you're working with new stucco or plaster, the PH level may be too alkaline to apply paint coatings right away. In this case, it's important to let the surface go through a curing process to bring the PH level down to a safe range of around 8 or 9. Failing to do so could result in "burning," which is when the paint coating does not adhere properly.

Another important consideration is caulking existing stucco cracks. To ensure the cracks don't reappear, it's best to use an elastomeric bridging compound rather than a standard masonry patching compound. These caulking materials may settle slightly and leave some of the crack visible, but they're less likely to re-crack as quickly as other materials.

At Purple Painting, we're experienced in all forms of stucco and masonry painting. We know how to test PH levels, which primers and patching compounds to use, and why. Our expert painters are skilled at getting the coatings from the bucket onto the walls without wasting time or materials. With our attention to detail and expertise, you can trust that your masonry and plaster surfaces will look their best and last for years to come.

Brick and CMU Block Walls

Red brick and CMU (concrete block) walls are porous. Paint soaks into them unevenly, and the open texture shows through a thin coat.

We fill the surface first with a block filler, then finish with high-build paints so the wall reads as one even colour. Brick and block need to breathe, so we use breathable, vapor-permeable coatings that let moisture in the wall dry out instead of trapping it behind the paint.

Wood Siding

Existing wood siding

To paint existing wood siding on a house, start by cleaning the surface with a pressure washer or a scrub brush and a cleaning solution. Allow it to dry completely before scraping and sanding any loose or rough areas. Apply a primer to the surface before applying the final coat of paint. Choose high-quality paint and use a brush or roller to apply the paint evenly. Apply a second coat if necessary and allow it to dry completely before removing any tape or coverings.

New wood siding

To paint new wood siding on a house, the first step is to ensure that the wood is properly dried and seasoned before applying any paint. Next, the wood should be cleaned and sanded to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Primer should then be applied to seal the wood and provide a base for the paint. Once the primer has dried, the paint can be applied in at least two coats, with each coat allowed to dry fully before applying the next. It's important to choose high-quality paint and brushes for a professional-looking finish.
