A two-storey Goleta house was repainted inside and out. Indoors we painted the walls, ceilings, doors, baseboard and trim throughout, the fireplace brick and the kitchen cabinets. Outside we painted the brick, the stucco, the wood trim, fascia and gutters, and the side and front entry doors. The garage interior was left out.

The kitchen cabinet fronts and drawers were primed with a spray set-up and finished in two coats of low sheen. The brick was prepared, primed and painted in two coats, the stucco was patched and painted corner to corner, and the front door threshold was stained and sealed after sample patches. The photos show the exterior brick being painted, with the surrounding walls and doors masked.

How we did it

  1. Prime and paint the walls and ceilings

New skim coated walls and ceilings were primed, then walls and ceilings throughout got two coats, with the priming and first coat of walls done before the new floors went in. Common areas were flat, and bathrooms and the kitchen were satin.

  2. Spray the new doors and trim

New wood doors and casings were prepared and sprayed, and new baseboard was patched, sanded and painted after the floors were installed.

  3. Convert the kitchen cabinets to paint

The kitchen cabinets, including the modified island, were primed with a conversion shellac primer, then spray finished in two coats, covering fronts, box frames and trims.

  4. Turn the red brick white

The red brick (exterior chimney, den fireplace and front column bases) got a masonry block filler and two coats of finish, flat outside and satin inside, with a high-heat satin black inside the fireplace.

  5. Paint the exterior wood and metal

Window and door trim, fascia, gutters and the side entry door were patched, sanded and primed where needed, then given two coats of exterior enamel.

  6. Refresh the front door and threshold

The interior side of the front doors was primed with a shellac primer and painted. The threshold got sample patches, then was sanded and sealed with a wiping stain and two coats of a UV-resistant exterior clear coat.
