A Santa Barbara home had a red wood perimeter fence and entry gate that did not suit the house. We pressure washed the fence, tested brown stain on it and then sprayed one coat of brown stain over the red, so the fence reads brown. The entry fence and gate were stained on both sides, and the same brown went on the fascia boards and window trim and on the back entry door.

The scope also covered priming the brick and grout with masonry sealer and painting it in two coats of flat paint, and repainting the kitchen walls and ceiling.

This page shows the fence before and the stain going on: the red fence, brown test patches and the fence being sprayed. We have no photo of the finished fence, and the stain and paint brands were not recorded, so no colours are listed.

How we did it

  1. Pressure wash

The fence was pressure washed only to clean off dirt and dust.

  2. Test the stain

Brown stain test patches were put on the red fence and the gate so the colour could be judged before the rest went on.

  3. Stain the fence and gate

One coat of brown stain was sprayed over the red fence and the entry fence and gate, both sides, to darken the red toward brown.

  4. Stain the house trim

The same brown stain went on the fascia boards and window trim, and the back entry door was sanded and re-stained to match the other wood around the house.

  5. Prime and paint the brick

The brick and grout were primed with masonry sealer and finished in two coats of a flat warm white.

  6. Paint the kitchen

The kitchen walls and ceiling were repainted, with touch-ups around the house.
