The arched wood entry door of a Riviera home was in rough shape. The wood had split along the top rail beside the hinge, a panel had rotted through, and the carved sunburst at the top was damaged. The door is very heavy and its arched top makes a replacement difficult, so the answer was to repair it and repaint it.

We sanded the damaged wood, patched it where needed and spot primed the repairs, then primed the whole door white. The knocker was masked off, and the door was laid flat to take its coats. Two coats of red-brown finished the outside of the door.

The door was part of a larger interior repaint of the home.

How we did it

  1. Mask the hardware

Motion-sensor hardware on the entry door was taken off and the door knocker was masked before priming.

  2. Sand and repair the damaged wood

The damaged panel and rails were sanded, and patched with wood filler where needed.

  3. Spot prime, then prime the door white

The repaired wood was spot primed, and the door was then primed white.

  4. Two coats of red-brown

The door was laid flat for its coats, with the first coat of red-brown going on over the primer and a second coat to finish.
