This project involved a complete interior renovation performed to 1920s historical standards. All existing wood elements were carefully stripped, bleached, and refinished to achieve a rich brown tone consistent with the original design. The upper plaster wainscoting was artistically faux-finished to complement the newly restored woodwork below, recreating the authentic character of the space. Areas previously covered in carpeted wall panels were replaced with new gypsum board, seamlessly finished and painted. Custom wood trim was added at all vertical corners, replicating details found in the original archival photographs to ensure historical accuracy and visual harmony throughout the space.
How we did it
-
Strip, fill and prep the existing wood
All existing wainscoting and door casing in the work area was stripped, filled and prepared, with bleaching or oiling where needed.
-
Stain the wood to match
The wainscoting and door casing were stained, and new mahogany patches and new vertical mouldings were stained to match, with custom stain mock-ups submitted for approval.
-
Create the faux wood finish
The existing upper wall mouldings in every room were given a faux wood look, with the final colour matched to the wainscoting.
-
Paint the existing plaster and mouldings
Existing plaster and mouldings above the drywall and on the ceilings were painted with a heavy spray application that covered without disturbing the plaster.
-
Prime and paint the new drywall
New drywall throughout was primed and given two coats of paint.
-
Touch up and blend
Industry-standard touch-ups were done, minimizing the appearance of joints and imperfections in the wood.
