Comprehensive exterior repainting of the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse, completed through a carefully planned five-phase, five-year process. The project included the preparation and coating of all architectural elements—wood windows and doors, ornamental corbels, plaster walls and soffits, and extensive wrought iron details.
As part of the restoration, damaged historical plaster top set was meticulously repaired using traditional lime, cement, and sand mixtures to match the original texture and composition of the 1929 construction. All surfaces were prepared to historic preservation standards, ensuring both aesthetic continuity and long-term protection. Finishes were applied using high-performance, breathable coating systems specifically designed for coastal environments, maintaining the courthouse’s historic integrity while enhancing its durability for decades to come.
How we did it
-
Repair the historical plaster
Damaged plaster top set was repaired with traditional lime, cement and sand mixtures to match the original texture and composition.
-
Prime new and repaired stucco
New and repaired stucco was primed with a masonry primer. Previously painted stucco did not need it.
-
Paint the plaster
The stucco and concrete surfaces were finished with an intermediate coat and a finish coat of an exterior acrylic.
-
Prime and paint the exterior wood
Wood windows, doors and ornamental corbels were primed with an exterior wood primer and given two coats of an opaque finish.
-
Coat the wrought iron
Ferrous metal, including the wrought iron, got a zinc-rich primer, two epoxy intermediate coats and a polyurethane finish, all Tnemec.
