Phase 3A of the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse exterior renovation covered the Hall of Records and Annex. Purple Painting was the painting subcontractor to Plant Construction, the general contractor, on this prevailing wage public works project for the County of Santa Barbara. It is one phase of the courthouse work described on the main courthouse page.

Our scope was the complete painting. We patched the existing plaster where the plans showed it, then finish painted every substrate: the plaster walls, crown molding and soffits, the wood and steel windows and doors, and the wrought iron and other metal, including railings, handrails, screens and shutters. Plaster was patched at the roof and soffits, in the Sunken Gardens and an alcove, and on the lower Anapamu wall and the Anacapa side, and a change order added more patching of painted plaster.

Stucco patches were primed with a masonry primer, and the stucco, soffits and corbels were finished in an exterior flat. Windows and doors were painted in an exterior satin. Bare metal got a zinc primer and a high-build epoxy intermediate coat, then a black urethane topcoat.

The balconies were waterproofed with a coating system: surface preparation and crack repair, flashing and drain details, then a primer, a base coat and a top coat with broadcast texture for slip resistance. On the top balcony on the Anacapa elevation we first removed the failing membrane and resurfaced the subfloor.

The painting is backed by a one-year warranty to the County.
