Interior Repaint with Accent Walls, Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara

Vaulted great room with freshly painted walls, ceiling and clerestory windows above the steps — Interior Repaint with Accent Walls, Santa Barbara

Purple Painting repainted the common areas and primary suite of a Santa Barbara home: walls in a warmer tone, ceilings in a lighter shade of the same colour, and three accent walls in orange, blue and yellow. A rolling scaffold reached the vaulted great room ceiling, and cracks were filled with a flexible bridging compound.

The owners wanted a warmer tone through their open living spaces, and asked for each room to be priced on its own so they could choose. We repainted the vaulted great room, the loft and stairwell, the sitting room, the hallway, the kitchen ceiling and soffit, and the primary bedroom and its hallway cove.

The walls went to a warmer tone and the ceilings to a lighter version of the same colour, so the rooms read as one continuous space. Sample boards at different strengths went up on site first, so the ceiling shade could be chosen against the walls.

Before any paint went on, the floors were covered, with Ram Board in the great room where a rolling scaffold reached the vaulted ceiling and rosin paper everywhere else, and the windows, sliders and doors were masked. Cracks at the wall and ceiling joints and beams were filled with a flexible bridging compound, which holds up longer than standard patching as the house moves.

Walls and ceilings were spot primed and painted, and three accent walls in orange, blue and yellow went on last, each built up over three coats.

How we did it

  1. Sample the ceiling colour

Sample boards of the wall colour and lighter versions of it went up on site, so the ceiling shade could be chosen against the walls.

  2. Protect the floors and windows

Ram Board went down in the great room where the rolling scaffold worked, rosin paper everywhere else, and the windows, sliders and doors were masked.

  3. Fill the cracks

Cracks at the wall and ceiling joints and beams were filled with a flexible bridging compound, which holds up longer than standard patching.

  4. Paint the ceilings

The ceilings, including the kitchen ceiling and soffit, were spot primed and painted in a lighter version of the wall colour, flat, with the great room's vaulted ceiling rolled from the scaffold.
