Gray to Blue Exterior Repaint, San Roque, Santa Barbara
San Roque · Santa Barbara
Purple Painting repainted the exterior of a gray cottage in San Roque, Santa Barbara, in bright blue siding with white trim and railings. We pressure washed it, prepped the worn wood, sprayed two coats on the siding and gave the trim two coats, plus the downspouts, and redid a deck the wrong paint had left sticky.

A tired gray cottage went bold: bright blue siding, crisp white trim and railings, and a fresh deck. We pressure washed the whole exterior, then prepped the wood, sanding, filling and priming the worn spots before any colour went on. The siding got two sprayed coats in a bright blue, for an even finish.
The trim, fascia, window casings, door frames, doors, railings and the tongue-and-groove soffit got two coats in white. The downspouts got a fresh coat too. We also redid the deck: someone else had painted it with the wrong kind of paint, and it had stayed sticky.
How we did it
-
Pressure wash
The full exterior of the house was pressure washed.
-
Scrape, sand and spot prime
Failing and peeling paint was scraped and sanded back, and the bare and repaired areas were spot primed.
-
Caulk and patch
Seams, joints and the gaps around windows and doors were caulked, and deteriorated spots at window casings and siding were patched.
-
Paint the siding
Spot primer on bare and repaired areas, then two finish coats on the wood lap siding.
-
Paint the trim, soffit and railings
Fascia boards, window casings, door frames and doors, porch railings, corner trim and the tongue-and-groove soffit each got spot primer and two finish coats.
-
Finish the downspouts
Gray metal downspouts got a coat to match the body colour.
