What is Skim Coating?
It's the process of applying a watered-down joint compound over cracks or texture inconsistencies to create a smooth surface, and can level uneven drywall seams. This project had both needs after a wooden bulletin board was removed from the wall. The drywall itself had a crack, which is common as your house shifts with the foundation and the frame expands/contracts from humidity. Repairs are essential to avoid moisture gathering within the walls, widening cracks over time, and the need for larger repairs in the future.
The final look was a prime and paint job- we even put a fresh coat on the wooden ceiling beams.
How we did it
-
Open up the damaged wall
The existing wallboard and trim were removed, wood backing was installed to support the void in the siding, and new drywall went up on the whole wall, cut in around the beams and fireplace.
-
Skim coat and sand
The wall was skim coated and sanded to a smooth, level-4 finish, and caulked with clear caulk where it meets the wood beams and siding, to cut in the paint line.
-
Prime
The new drywall was primed with a regular primer, and the stained wood panelling around it with a conversion primer.
-
Paint the wall
Two coats of off-white enamel, corner to corner.
-
Refit the trim
The baseboard and trim at the fireplace were removed before the drywall went in, then reinstalled, patched, caulked and painted.
-
Refresh the beams
All the wood beams in the den were cleaned with a degreaser, patched, sanded and spot primed as needed, then painted with one coat in an eggshell finish.
