A classic Hope Ranch Craftsman with green siding, red window frames and a big wraparound deck, plus a guest house out back. We brought the whole property back: body, trim, beams, railings, stucco site walls and a hand-refinished front door.

The full exterior of the main house and the guest house got fresh paint: stucco, wood siding, eaves, fascia and exposed beams. The window frames and casings, door frames, railings, rail caps and steps were painted too, with the window frames in red.

The damaged fascia and beam ends were scraped, filled and epoxied, and the worst pieces were flagged for a carpenter instead of being painted over. Damaged stucco on the garden site walls was patched with a bonding adhesive, then rolled out fresh. The front entry door was sanded down to bare wood and given a new clear coat, and the French doors got a light refinish.

How we did it

  1. Pressure wash and prep

All surfaces of the main house, guest house and site walls were pressure washed and prepped before painting.

  2. Repair damaged wood

Spot wood repair was done as it turned up during prep, mainly at rail caps, fascia and deteriorated siding boards.

  3. Refresh the body and trim

Wood lap siding, stucco, eave soffits, fascia, window and door casings and exposed beams each got a refresh coat in the existing colours.

  4. Paint the railings and rail caps

Deck railings, spindles and posts were painted in the body colour, with the rail caps done separately in black, and the wood deck steps painted too.

  5. Coat the site walls

Stucco retaining, planter, courtyard and terrace walls got a refresh coat, with the brick caps left alone.

  6. Refinish the doors and porch ceilings

The front entry doors were sanded and clear coated with no change of colour, and the cedar porch ceilings were sanded and varnished to keep the natural wood look.

Front door sanded to bare wood with the surrounding wall masked in paper and tape, before the clear coat — Craftsman Exterior Refresh, Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara
