Brick Fireplace Paint Stripping, San Roque, Santa Barbara
San Roque · Santa Barbara
Purple Painting stripped the white paint off a living room brick fireplace in a San Roque, Santa Barbara home and brought back the natural brick. We masked the room, brushed on paint stripper, covered it and let it work, then scraped it clean.

The brick fireplace in this San Roque living room had been painted white. We stripped the paint off the brick so the natural red brick shows again.
After masking the floors and mantle, we brushed paint stripper over the whole brick surface with brushes and spatulas, covered it with plastic and tape, and let it sit for at least a day. Then we scraped the loosened paint off from top to bottom with wire brushes and scrapers, and cleaned up.
The work is one of several jobs at the same house: a deck and railings refinish and a living room wall repaint around the fireplace, where a custom wood mantel built by another contractor now sits above the brick.
How we did it
-
Protect the room
The floors around the fireplace and the mantle were masked for site protection.
-
Brush on paint stripper
Paint stripper was applied by brush and spatula until the whole brick surface was saturated.
-
Cover and let it work
The brick was covered in plastic and taped, because the stripper has to sit on the surface for at least 24 hours.
-
Scrape from top to bottom
We returned and scraped the loosened paint off with wire brushes and scrapers, working from the top down.
-
Clean up
The debris was cleaned up and disposed of.
