Shingles, Siding, Chimney and Brick, Montecito
Montecito
One of Purple Painting’s first large projects, a full exterior repaint of a Montecito home with the color changed throughout: the Spanish roof tiles were pressure washed and painted red, the aged brick went to the same red, the stucco, siding and trellises were painted warm white with brown eaves and trim, and termite-damaged trellises were repaired first.

This holds a special place in our hearts as one of our first large projects: a full exterior job for a Montecito home, with the color changed throughout. We pressure washed the Spanish roof tiles and painted them red. The aged natural brick went to the same color, creating cohesion throughout. The stucco, board and batten siding, fences and trellises were painted a warm white, with brown eaves, fascia and window trim, and the front porch floor was painted gray.
Before painting, the crew scraped loose paint, patched stucco and wood, and caulked the joints where stucco meets wood. The tiles were primed red and the siding white. We mocked up color samples on the house and on the roof tiles, and darkened the tile sample to the owner's liking before the full application. There was major wood repair needed on the trellises due to termite damage. We have a team of not just painters, but skilled handymen. Once we completed the repairs we coated the trellises and gates in white to open up the space.
How we did it
-
Samples and colour mockups
We met with the client to decide on colour options, applied the samples as a mockup on the main residence and on the roof tiles, and darkened the roof tile samples to the client’s liking.
-
Pressure wash
Each of the wood fence, wood pergolas, main residence, driveway stucco wall and roof tiles was pressure washed, then all the debris was cleaned up.
-
Mask
Glass windows and the items to be protected from spraying were masked.
-
Scrape, patch and caulk
Loose and failing paint was scraped. Wood eaves were patched with Bondo and all the wood siding with wood filler, then sanded. Bare stucco got a bonding primer before patching, and the stucco was patched to match the texture as closely as possible. Caulk went on where two substrates meet (stucco and wood), and dirty caulking around the windows was primed.
-
Prime
The roof tiles were primed with a masonry primer tinted to a red brick colour, and the stucco and driveway wall with a white masonry primer. Wood eaves were spot primed with a stain-blocking primer tinted brown, and the wood siding and pergolas with a white stain-blocking primer. The front porch was sanded with an orbital sander.
-
Paint the roof tiles
The roof tiles were painted in a custom matched red.
-
Paint the siding, stucco and windows
The board and batten siding and the stucco, including the driveway wall, were painted in a warm white, and the doors and moving windows in the same colour with a satin sheen.
-
Paint the trim, eaves and fascia
The window and door trim and the wood tongue-and-groove eaves and fascia boards were painted brown.
-
Paint the fences and trellises
The fences and trellises that were already painted got one coat of flat paint in the warm white.
-
Front porch, front door and touch-ups
The front concrete porch was painted in a custom grey porch and floor enamel, and the front door in satin, followed by touch-ups.
Before painting, it is important to remove debris that could change the texture of the finished product or prevent new coats from bonding correctly. This can include chalking, mildew, and salt-buildup. Still, there is a finesse that's required to not damage wood, loosen masonry or drive moisture into the siding. We have that finesse.
