Edwards Construction was doing a full to-the-stud remodel of areas of The Municipal Tennis Courts in Santa Barbara. We converted and sealed the tannic heavy wood ceilings and beams by priming with shellac and water-based wood under-coaters, a two-step prime process. All the new drywall and existing wood ceilings were then painted.
How we did it
-
Prepare the wood ceilings
Nails and the old suspended ceiling track were removed from the existing wood ceilings and beams, along with loose conduit, before priming.
-
Prime the wood ceilings and beams
The whole tongue-and-groove ceiling, beams and exposed conduit were primed.
-
Paint the wood ceilings and beams
The primed ceiling, beams and exposed conduit were painted out in a flat finish.

-
Prime and paint the new drywall
The newly finished drywall surfaces were primed and given the eggshell finish, with touch-up only where the new work tied into existing patches.

-
Paint doors and window casings
The existing doors and frames were primed and painted with minimal prep and without taking hardware off, and the new door and window casings got the same colour in eggshell.
