Purple Painting converted the remaining yellow walls of a Santa Barbara home to white, patching worn lower walls, caulking the gaps at the beams and painting two flat coats, then refreshed the front entry door with spar varnish.

Some areas of this Santa Barbara home had already been converted from yellow to white. We converted the rest: the primary bedroom, the piano room, the pool table room and a small hallway.

The owners moved everything to the middle of each room, and we covered the floors and personal items with plastic, paper and tape. We patched the damaged lower wall areas, sanded the patches and spot primed them, caulked the gaps where the drywall meets the wood beams with a clear caulk, and cut a clean line in with paint afterwards. The walls then got two coats of the same white, flat, to cover the colour change from yellow, and all the masking and dust was cleaned up.

We also refreshed the front entry door: a light sanding that kept the existing stained colour, then two coats of an exterior-grade UV-resistant spar varnish.

How we did it

  1. Protect the house

    Furniture was moved to the middle of the rooms by the owners, and the floors and personal items were covered with plastic, paper and tape.

  2. Patch and prime

    Damaged lower wall areas from wear and tear were patched, sanded and spot primed, and the dust cleaned up.

  3. Caulk the beam joints

    Open gaps and joints where the drywall meets the beams were caulked with clear caulk, and a clean line was cut in with paint afterwards.

  4. Paint two coats of warm white

    Wherever the yellow remained, the walls were painted in two flat coats of warm white to cover the colour change.

  5. Refresh the front door

    The wood of the front entry door was lightly sanded, keeping its stained colour, and given two coats of exterior-grade UV-resistant spar varnish.

  6. Clean up

    All the masking, dust and debris were cleaned up.
