Seven new factory-primed shaker interior doors, for the bedrooms and utility room of a Santa Barbara home, finished on site in a satin finish. We removed, labeled and staged the doors and took off all the hardware, set up a spray tent in the backyard and used a shed as a clean drying area.
We caulked the panel joints of each shaker door for a seamless look, primed the doors over the factory prime, and sprayed two coats of a urethane trim enamel in satin. We then rehung the doors, touched them up, and broke down and cleaned the spray area. The result is a smooth, brush-mark-free satin finish.
How we did it
-
Remove and stage the doors
Each door came off its hinges, was labeled and staged, with all the hardware taken off.
-
Set up a spray area
A spray tent went up in the backyard, with a shed set aside as a clean place for the doors to dry.
-
Caulk the panel joints
The joints around each shaker panel were caulked for a seamless look.
-
Prime
One coat of sandable primer over the factory prime, for a smooth base.

-
Spray two coats
Two sprayed coats of satin trim enamel, for a smooth finish with no brush marks.
-
Rehang and clean up
The doors went back on, got a touch-up, and the spray area was broken down and cleaned.
